RMeeting new people in real life after meeting them online or through an advert
and tips on how to do it safely
Meeting people on the internet, through chat room, personal ads or through phone services can be fun but if you want to turn your friendship into something more real, and maybe something romantic, you may like to consider meeting them in person.
It is possible to encounter some weirdoes or people who aren't quite who they say they are. You might find that the meeting doesn't even take place because the person doesn't even show up.
They could be really strange or not how they seemed online or in the newspaper ad. The way someone portrays themselves through words on a screen or on paper can be very different to the way they are in person. You may be right for each other online but not offline.
Another thing you should watch out for is whether what they have told you is the truth. You might find that the gorgeous, young person with a very well paid job that you are expecting to meet is actually an old, ugly person who lives their life through the internet!
You'll enjoy meeting people more if you make sure you're safe. Here are some important things to do if you're meeting someone for the first time:
Speak to the person on the telephone before meeting. This may help you decide if you really should meet the person. Trust your instincts and do not meet with anyone if you are unsure.
Meet in a public place with a friendly atmosphere. This will put you both at ease. Do not agree to meet anywhere where you could be at risk.
Tell a friend where you are meeting and who. If you have a mobile phone, arrange for someone to ring you during the time you are out to make sure you are okay.
If you keep a private diary, write where you are going and who with.
Make your own way to and from the meeting. It's best not accept a lift, however kind the offer.
Do keep some personal details to yourself, e.g. your address. Wait until you know the other person better.
If the person you are meeting is okay, they will appreciate your caution.
GOOD LUCK & HAVE FUN!
